citations3.jpg (13445 bytes)Ryan's relationship with Emery began in 1977. Cohlmia Air had entered into a contract with Emery to operate a Cessna Citation jet for Emery's overnight letter service. Cohlmia was unwilling to service that contract without outside assistance. The contract was sub-serviced to Ryan Aviation Corporation. Ron Ryan initially made the arrangements for his company to be paid directly by Emery, and this was the beginning of the successful relationship that exists today. Emery served notice on Cohlmia that it was going to cancel the Citation contract. Ron Ryan, with permission from Cohlmia, went to Emery directly to discuss with them the advantages of a Cessna Citation over other aircraft they were using. He returned to Wichita with a contract to operate eight Cessna Citations, owned by Ryan, on a nightly basis out of the Smyrna, Tennessee hub. At that time, Ryan had approximately seventy employees.

 Next Chapter:   Passenger Operations

In 1981, Emery decided to combine their small aircraft overnight express letter operation with their overnight freight operation for any size shipment.

Emery727-1.jpg (242563 bytes)Even though Ryan had never before operated large aircraft, its record of on-time performance and completion percentages were unparalleled in the history of Emery's operations.  Because of this, Ryan was given the opportunity to bid to become an air carrier in Emery's new large aircraft operation with the new hub it had built in Dayton, Ohio. Ryan first operated five and then eight Boeing 727 aircraft for Emery Worldwide the first year of operation.

At that point in time, no company had ever become an FAR Part 121 operator in a period of less than one year.

Ryan, together with the cooperation of the Kansas City Regional Office of the Federal Aviation Administration, completed all the requirements to convene operations pursuant to FAR Part 121 in only sixty days!

Ryan maintains a large support staff including maintenance inspectors, maintenance controllers, mechanics, flight followers, dispatchers, and other administrative personnel necessary to comply with all FAA safety and reliability standards. Personnel are based in Wichita and Dayton for the Emery system, in Indianapolis for the United States Postal System, and in most major cities in the United States as well as in many foreign locations.
