On August 21, 1989, RIA started flying eight
DC-9-15Fs and nine B-727-100s for the United States Postal Service under a subcontract with Emery Worldwide Airlines. By 1995, this increased to seventeen 727s.

On the initial startup, Ryan International had only two weeks to get the DC-9s and B-727s on its FAA approved operating certificate.   Ryan was  operating within a two week time span!!!

Over the life of this contract Ryan International has been able to maintain a 98.0% on-time performance record with these aircraft.  Ryan has also kept the cost of the operation substantially lower than Emery was paying its other contract operators with the same type of aircraft.
